Lake Effect is a 2-year film project highlighting freestyle skier Mike King’s 10-year winter debut in his home state of Michigan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mike’s moral compass had him trade big mountains for the hills of the midwest. By changing his perspective, he created an opportunity and turned a bummer of a scenario into an epic winter. Follow Mike as he rediscovers his backyard and dives into the plentiful midwest terrain and thriving ski culture.

Deep Dive
The current state of the world has inspired professional skier Mike King to maximize the winter in his home state of Michigan this ski season to help mitigate the spread of Covid-19 and reduce his carbon footprint amidst the climate crisis. "Lake Effect" intends to change the common perception of adventure and inspire others to explore the possibilities of their own surrounding area. With record lake effect snowfall in the forecast, Mike King looks forward to creating a unique backcountry ski film that dives into the potential of the untapped terrain close to home.
In his distinct 'king of the road' fashion, Mike will be living in his rig while exploring the rugged coastline of the Great Lakes in search of untouched cliffs, pillows, glade skiing, and freshwater waves to revel in the severe Michigan winter. The theme of "Lake Effect" is to take advantage of each day regardless of the whereabouts, the weather, or the trouble that faces us. The film will capture Mike's contagious personality to navigate potentially adverse ski conditions, harsh winter surf, and winter van life while subtly telling the story of Michigan ski culture, geology, and mindfulness in the time of climate change, Covid-19, and systematic inequality.
More About Mike
Mike King is a 29-year-old self-proclaimed "blue-collar skier" from Central Lake, Michigan. After a high school ski career of race podiums, Mike moved west and dedicated years to the road chasing snow between harvest seasons at his family's orchard, King Orchards. He has since established a strong new relationship with the Great Lakes that has enhanced his appreciation for his home state.
